First Iron Fist got the ax and now this – Netflix has officially cancelled Luke Cage. 

In a simple combined statement, Netflix and Marvel said, “Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

This news comes only a week after the cancellation of fellow Marvel-based series Iron Fist and on the day of the third season premiere of fellow Defender, Daredevil. With its consistent ratings and mostly positive reviews, the sudden canceling of the show comes as a surprise. However, according to source to Deadline, it’s mostly due to creative differences and an inability for the involved parties to come to an agreement in terms of direction for the third season.

There is currently no word on whether or not Marvel’s parent company Disney has plans to move the show to their upcoming streaming service, but considering how well received the first two seasons of the series were, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone if the show were to find a new home there.
