It’s  been almost five years since the PlayStation 4 was released and if you were anticipating a new gaming console, you will have to wait just a little bit longer. In an interview with Financial Times, CEO and president of Sony, Kenichiro Yoshida, stated that “At this point, what I can say is it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware”.

The PlayStation department of Sony has been their best-performing division every full fiscal year since the PS4 was launched in November 2013. The company ended 2017’s fiscal year with a revenue amounting to almost $17.53 billion— nearly 23 percent of the company’s $75 billion total.

The upcoming console has not yet been named and it is unclear whether Sony will continue its trend and call their newest addition “PlayStation 5″. It is also currently unclear about exactly when we can expect the next addition to the PlayStation family, however, it will be at least three more years.

“We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” said John Kodera, the current head of Sony Interactive Entertainment. In an interview back in May, he noted that the company plans to utilize the importance of online services as being a major part in the future of PlayStation:

“We need to depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle,” Kodera said. “We’re no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they’re two different things.”
