James Gunn in Talks to Script and Direct ‘Suicide Squad 2’ for Warner Bros.

After being dropped by Marvel to direct and script Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn is in talks to direct and script Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros. The sequel is reportedly not a direct follow-up to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad.

The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor was previously attached to the project, but sources have indicated that it fell apart once Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn meets Birds of Prey project developed a similar story to O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2.

If this deal follows through, Gunn will be the second director to be hired by Warner Bros. after being let go by Marvel. WB hired Joss Whedon to help script and helm 2017’s Justice League after Zack Snyder stepped aside for personal reasons.

WB seems unfazed by the controversy surrounding Gunn and is pursuing him after his successful run with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Gunn’s previous directing gigs indicate that he is well-matched for the material.

Previous reporting has suggested that Suicide Squad 2 will not feature Harley Quinn, as she is expected to appear in the Birds of Prey project helmed by Cathy Yan, a potential Gotham City Sirens project helmed by David Ayer, and a Harley & Joker project helmed by Glenn Ficarra.

Other female villains are expected to join the ensemble, the most persistent rumour has suggested Killer Frost may get her cinematic debut based on the reception to her role in the animated Suicide Squad.
