Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most celebrated modern animated series that just keeps on giving. Fans of the Nickelodeon show never wasted time when it came to diving into the original three seasons, sequel series The Legend of Korra, and numerous graphic novels and comics that fill in the gaps left by both shows. There is always, of course, the live-action film that many fans would like to forget about. However, the time to rejoice has arrived yet again for Entertainment Weekly have just revealed that the Avatar universe will continue to expand with a new series of young adult novels!
Nickelodeon has partnered with Abrams Children’s Books on a series based on Avatar Kyoshi. Fans will recognize the name as being the longest living human Avatar at over 230 years old hailing from the Earth Kingdom. She would be succeeded by Avatar Roku and Aang. Not only has she been briefly seen in the animated series before, but her legacy has been felt with the fan favorite Kyoshi Warrior characters on Kyoshi Island. There is still much mystery to her left and it will all begin to unravel in the first book titled The Rise of Kyoshi.
Fans should not worry for the two books currently included in the deal will be written in consultation with the co-creator and executive producer of Avatar and The Legend of Korra, Michael Dante DiMartino. F.C. Yee, whose name many might recognize from The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, will be credited as the main author. Senior Vice President and publisher of Abrams Children’s Books Andrew Smith released a statement along with this announcement.
We’re thrilled to be partnering with Michael Dante DiMartino, Nickelodeon, and critically acclaimed author F.C. Yee to add to the canon of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Bringing Kyoshi’s previously untold story to life in original novels will be a major pop culture event, not only for fans of the show, but also for readers hungry for a new epic YA saga. The Rise of Kyoshi has all the hallmarks of what YA readers love — bold storytelling set in a rich landscape with a strong heroine at the forefront!
The first book in this series, The Rise of Kyoshi, will available next July, but fans can pre-order the novel here.
