Matt Smith Joins ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’
The Crown and Doctor Who star Matt Smith is headed to a galaxy far, far away. The actor will be joining the final installment of the Skywalker saga in Star Wars: Episode IX which is currently in production. Smith’s role is yet to be revealed.
He will join returning cast members such as John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, as well as newcomers Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Dominic Monaghan. Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher will reprise their roles from the original trilogy, featuring previously unreleased footage shot Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Leia’s scenes. Anthony Daniels and Mark Hamill will also be returning as C-3PO and Luke Skywalker.

J.J. Abrams, who directed Force Awakens, will return after Colin Trevorrow departed due to creative differences. Kathleen Kennedy is also returning as producer. Smith’s role as Prince Philip on Netflix’s The Crown earned Smith an Emmy nomination, but he will not be returning as all major roles have been recast. He will be playing Charles Manson in the upcoming Charlie Says, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
