‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Stays Crazy Rich for Second Week at Box Office
The hit sensation that came out in theaters on August 15 shot up to the top of the box office for its opening weekend. Now, a week later, Crazy Rich Asians holds that top spot, already raking in $25 million.
This is astounding for any film as it indicates that the film is only seeing a 6% decline in box offie sales. Last weekend, the film earned $26.5 million in its opening weekend and it’s estimated to reach the range of $23 to $26 million this weekend.
Guys—this is blowing my mind and should do the same for Hollywood (and anyone who loved #CrazyRichAsians). CRA projects at $7M in box office yesterday. It made $7.3M LAST Friday in its opening.
That’s a drop of just 3.7%.
By comparison, Mamma Mia dropped 67% 1st to 2nd Friday. pic.twitter.com/RHJQvSQdHN

The statistics, as shown above by Jeff Yang, reveal that on the two Fridays alone, Crazy Rich Asians only dropped 3% in sales. And even more amazing, it goes to show how well-received this film has been. As Yang stated, “[You] don’t get this result unless the movie has begun to pull in ‘mainstream’ viewers in big numbers.”
The film stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, and Awkwafina, and a sequel is already in the works. Crazy Rich Asians is out in theaters now.
