When Netflix released the first teaser for Stranger Things season 3 last month, a lot of fans were expecting a lighter, funner season. Turns out that isn’t the case all that much.

Executive Producer Shawn Levy was interviewed by The Playlist this week, where he gave more hints of what to expect in the upcoming season.

When asked if the teaser’s lighter tone was an indicator of what to expect in season 3 or a misdirection, Levy responded, “That would be part of the store, but not at all representative of the season. There’s no question that, as you saw in that infomercial, Starcourt Mall is a part of season 3. As is summertime. So season 3 has a really healthy dose of poppy, bright levity and cultural fun. But I can only promise you that season 3 eventually goes places that are darker, and unquestionably more action-packed, than we’ve ever gone before. It would be a mistake for anyone to think that season 3 is the summer of fun and lightness because it’s a whole lot more than that.”

Levy will be directing the third and fourth episodes of season 3, as he has done for each season of the show. Levy also has two films in the pipeline he’s attached to direct, those being Uncharted and a remake of Starman.

Cary Elwes joins season 3 as Mayor Kline, while Jake Busey will be playing a journalist named Bruce. Maya Thurman-Hawke will be playing Robin, who works with Steve at the Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor. Francesca Reale plays Heather, a lifeguard at one of Hawkins’ local pools. Priah Ferguson, who plays Lucas’ sister Erica, has been upped to series regular.
