Warner Bros. Reportedly Wants to Cast Biracial Black Canary for ‘Birds of Prey’
With Birds of Prey expected to begin filming in early 2019, casting announcements are likely to emerge sooner rather than later. According to a report from Heroic Hollywood, Warner Bros. is reportedly looking to cast a biracial actress to star as Black Canary.
An insider told Heroic Hollywood that in addition to a biracial actress, the studio wants someone to play “a world-weary Black Canary who has the ability to sing.” If true, this could be the role that Lady Gaga was offered but ultimately turned down.
Details such as who Warner Bros. is eyeing for the role remain under wraps. It’ll be an interesting announcement, regardless, as the studio continues to make efforts at diversifying its film casts.

As of now, both iterations of Black Canary in the comics (Dinah Drake and Dinah Laurel Lance) have exclusively been depicted as white. However, the Arrowverse’s present Black Canary, Dinah Drake, is played by multiracial actress, Juliana Harkavy.
Thus far, the only actress attached to star in Birds of Prey is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Characters that will join her include Black Canary, Cassandra Cain, Huntress, and Renee Montoya. Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is directing the film, which will see the Birds of Prey go up against Gotham crime lord, Black Mask.
