‘Queen Sugar’ Renewed for Fourth Season
Queen Sugar will return for a fourth season with OWN making the announcement ahead of the show’s season 3 finale, which will air on August 22.
Created by Ava DuVernay, starring Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, and Kofi Siriboe, the series is based on a book by Natalie Baszile.

The critically acclaimed drama set in Louisiana and explores the complex lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings – Nova, Charley, and Ralph Angel Bordelon.
Having been a part of the origin of Queen Sugar, long-time show writer and co-producer Anthony Sparks will return in the fourth season as the show’s new showrunner/executive producer. Taking the reins from Kat Candler, the award-winning and twice nominated NAACP Image Award writer’s credits include: Undercovers, Lincoln Heights, The District and The Blacklist.
Speaking about the show, OWN’s president Erik Logan says:
“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today…We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”
Premiering on the May 29, the third season saw the Bordelons continuing their fight “to save their family farm and father’s legacy as they navigate their own personal journeys,” a fight that goes beyond who they are as a family but affects their community. Behind the scenes, season three saw DuVernay assemble “an all-female directing team”; a creative decision which is set to continue into the new season.
Also in the cast are Tina Lifford, Omar J. Dorsey, Nicholas Ashe, Dondré T. Whitfield, Bianca Lawson, Henry G. Sanders and Timon Kyle Durrett who guest stars. Ava DuVernay, Oprah Winfrey, Kat Candler and Paul Garnes all executive produced season three of the Warner Horizon Scripted Television-produced show.
