Netflix has officially sold BoJack Horseman to Comedy Central in a library deal.
The sale is the first of its kind, and it will help further monetize the series–an issue many creators have brought up. The Viacom-owned cable network will own the first five seasons of the series, and will also stream some episodes on its website and app. It is still unclear if new episodes from upcoming seasons will be available on the network as well.
This is only the second series to be sold in syndication–Sundance TV previously bought the rights Amazon’s Transparent–making this a win for the streaming giant and content creators everywhere. When the series was created by the Tornante Company in 2014, Netflix did not have complete distribution rights to it, as that policy hadn’t been adopted yet.
Tanya Giles, general manager at Comedy Central released this statement regarding the sale:
Comedy Central has a long history of using potent satire to help make sense of trying times, so BoJack Horseman is a perfect fit in our lineup. We’re thrilled to be the first to put BoJack on linear TV, and who better than an animated horse to teach us a thing or two about humanity? Straight from the horse’s mouth.
Tornante Company founder and former Disney CEO Michael Eisner also released a statement:
BoJack Horseman has been a groundbreaking show, defining the best in adult animated comedy just as South Park was before it. It is very fitting that the two shows will air back-to-back on Comedy Central.
“BoJack Horseman” is executive produced by Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, and Steven A. Cohen. Will Arnett and Aaron Paul also executive-produce. The Emmy-nominated and critically acclaimed series stars Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins, and Amy Sedaris. The show’s fifth season will air September 14, 2018.
