Daniel Kaluuya and Lena Waithe to Team Up in Melina Matsoukas ‘Queen & Slim’ for Universal
After a long run bidding war, Brad Weston’s Makeready has closed a deal to finance Queen & Slim, with a script written by Lena Waithe (Master of None, Ready Player One) and starring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther).
Directed by Melina Matsoukas (Insecure and Beyonce’s Formation), with a story from James Frey and Lena Waithe, the film is said to be a ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ type-of-story, revolving around a black couple, on a first date who ends up killing a police officer in self-defence and has to go on the run, head to Cuba.

Kaluuya is set to star and Waithe has written the script
The film will be Matsoukas feature directorial debut. She alongside Waithe and casting director Carmen Cuba are in the search for a “fresh face” to play Queen, as Kaluuya is playing the titular character Slim.
When asked about this film, both Matsoukas and Waithe had a statement.
“To me, this is protest art,” said Waithe. “It’s about being black and trying to fall in love in a world that’s burning down around you.”
While Matsoukas added:
“It’s a film that defines black love as a revolutionary act. It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on black people in America.”
