Warner Bros. is moving forward with Birds of Prey and we have more details of what’s to be expected from the film. This information reported by The Wrap was revealed by inside sources and has yet to be confirmed by Warner Bros., Cathy Yan, and Margot Robbie.
The first all-women DC team has its roster comprised of Black Canary, Huntress, Lady Shiva, Renee Montoya and Katana. Karen Fukuhara is expected to reprise her Suicide Squad role in Birds of Prey and Margot Robbie is returning as Harley Quinn. Robbie will also be taking on producing duties for this Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey team up. This line-up reinforces Robbie’s commitment to have a diverse group of women showcased in the film.
A quick breakdown of the Birds of Prey roster:
- Black Canary is one of the founding members of the Birds of Prey team and in addition to her ultrasonic scream, she is one of the best street-fighters in the world.
- Huntress is a former mafia princess who becomes a vigilante in Gotham City. She lacks Batman’s control and is prone to excessive violence. She becomes the Birds of Prey leader in Black Canary’s absence.
- Renee Montoya is a detective in the Gotham City Police Department. She has taken on the identity of the Question and was in a romantic relationship with Batwoman.
- Lady Shiva is a supervillainess and anti-hero often associated with Batman. She is a martial arts grandmaster and the mother of Cassandra Cain – who is also one of the greatest martial artists in the world.
Other rumors suggest that the premise will follow the Birds of Prey working together to protect young Cassandra Cain. Cain will be the Batgirl of the film, presumably to save Barbara Gordon for Batgirl. The Birds of Prey will try to save Cain from her dangerous father, David Cain. David Cain will be the primary villain. Cassandra Cain — trained since birth to be the greatest assassin in the world — is being pursued and protected by a group of the most dangerous and fierce heroes and anti-heroes.
Cathy Yan was tapped to direct the film, which was scripted by Christina Hodson. Hodson is also scripting the upcoming Batgirl movie. With this roster and premise, the R-rated girl gang film Robbie wants is a no-brainer.
Production is expected to commence in January.
