‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Adds J.B. Smoove in Lead Role
Spider-Man: Far From Home is one of Marvel Studios’ most exciting projects in production. The sequel to Homecoming will once again be co-produced by Sony Pictures and is currently slated to hit theaters next year on July 5th. Tom Holland will be returning as mostly everyone’s now favorite Spider-Man along with some new and familiar faces. The returning cast featuring the likes of Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, and Michael Keaton will be joined by newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal is set to play the fan favorite Marvel villain Mysterio. This great cast is the fuel that is putting this sequel on everyone’s radars. How much better can it get one might think?
Deadline is here to answer that question for they have just confirmed that J.B. Smoove has joined the cast in a lead role. Smoove is best known for his stand up and comedic characters in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Black Dynamite, and the just-released Uncle Drew. Smoove’s part in Far From Home is being kept under wraps, but many are assuming that he will be playing J. Jonah Jameson.
This assumption comes from the fact that the iconic Spidey character was missing from Homecoming and because Smoove’s comedy style matches well for Jameson. One can get a sense of how he will interact with Tom Holland based on an Audi promotion they worked on together for the previous film which can be seen below.
Many can agree that Smoove just kind of screams J. Jonah Jameson. One should not count the Audi promo as MCU canon because it would seem silly for the driving instructor having a lead role in the sequel. This promo could have been what convinced the powers at be to hire Smoove for the new role. JK Simmons completely owned the Jameson role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films. It makes sense for Marvel and Sony to want to distance themselves from the past and go in a new direction for the current crowd.
How excited are you to see Smoove in the MCU? Do you think he is playing Jameson and if so do you think he is a good choice for a new interpretation? Let us know your thoughts on our social media and stay tuned for more updates on Spider-Man: Far From Home!
