Mixed Reception Can’t Stop ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ From Dominating Box Office in Second Week
If there is one thing that we can all agree that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has proved- its that people sure do love dinosaurs. The sequel to the box office juggernaut that was 2015’s Jurassic World opened last week in the states to huge numbers and incredibly mixed reception. Both the critic and audience scores on the popular movie site Rotten Tomatoes show to be negative or “rotten”. Meanwhile, the popular movie review site, Cinemascore, gave the film an A-minus.
Usually, this kind of negative reception could also prove to have a negative effect on a film’s box office performance. General audiences pay more attention to this kind of reception thank you may think. However, Variety is now reporting that the film will hold the first place title this week by earning a strong $59 million from 4,485 North American locations.

This second-weekend earn is a 60% decline from its huge $148 million opening weekend. This statistic is not so bad when you find out that Universal has since earned $204.8 million domestically and $809 million worldwide from Fallen Kingdom. This just makes you think if Chris Pratt and dinosaurs can replicate this fair sequel success when the third film in the Jurassic World franchise comes out in a few years. If that film were to also gain the same mixed reception- would the profits still go unaffected like they are now?
Coming in at second place this weekend is Incredibles 2 with an estimated $44 million. Coming in at third place is Sicario: Day of the Soldado with an estimated $18.2 million. Not so bad when you compare it to the $12.1 million debut of the first Sicario. Ant-Man and the Wasp will definitely take over Chris Pratt and his dino-pals this coming weekend. If mixed reception proved to not affect Universal’s latest dino flick in its second weekend, will it come to take a bite when the sequel tries to stretch its legs in the incoming weeks? Stay tuned for that answer and if you have seen Fallen Kingdom, what were your thoughts? Let us know on social media and pitch us your ideas for the next film in the franchise!
