Spoilers ahead for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5.
According to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-showrunner Jed Whedon, Graviton may not be dead, even though it appeared that way in the season 5 finale. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first hinted that comic book villain Graviton would be appearing on the show all the way back in season 1, but didn’t pick up that plot thread until this year’s fifth season. In a twist no one saw coming, General Glenn Talbot, longtime ally/frenemy of S.H.I.E.L.D., ended up injecting himself with Gravitonium and transformed into the long hinted super-villain.
Talbot/Graviton also turned out to be the true “Destroyer of Worlds” (not Daisy Johnson) and the one responsible for cracking the earth in a dystopian future that, thankfully, S.H.I.E.L.D. was ultimately able to prevent from happening. The season 5 finale ended with Daisy beating Graviton in a fight by “quaking” him into space and seemingly killing him in the process.
When asked if Graviton could still be alive, Whedon told Entertainment Weekly, “This is Marvel, and even more, it’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I know we see him floating in space, but he’s Graviton, so you never know. So if the rest of the fans feel the way you do, then chances are he might not be super dead.”
The season 5 finale, ‘The End’, was designed to serve as a series finale in case the series didn’t get renewed for a sixth season. At the same time, it set the stage for the now-confirmed season 6 to bring back at least one character who sadly didn’t make it past the season 5 finale, Fitz, who was killed during the battle with Graviton. Coulson could feature in some capacity, even though the character was closer to dying by the episode’s conclusion. And again, this is Marvel, so anything can happen.
‘The End’ left Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with a clean slate so season 6 can seemingly go anywhere. The sky’s the limit.
What do you think? Will Graviton return? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
