Universal Closes U.S. Rights to All-Female Spy Thriller ‘355’
Almost a couple of weeks ago, Jessica Chastain and Simon Kinberg had been pitching an all-female spy franchise, titled 355, at Cannes. Since the pitch, many U.S. bidders have fought for the rights of this series, and Universal came out on top. According to Deadline, the deal set was a little over $20 million for Universal to acquire 355.
With the script written by Theresa Rebeck, 355 is set to star Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Fan Bingbing, Penelope Cruz, and Marion Cotillard, and it’s to be directed by Simon Kinberg.
The Cannes Festival was just last week where Chastain and Kinberg presented their franchise, featuring the star-studded cast to help pitch this ambitious idea. With the attention that it has received, 355 has certainly become one of the biggest Cannes market packages in memory.
Some of the other bidders that Universal beat out include Amazon Studios and Global Road. And now that Universal has gotten the U.S. rights to the series, international markets are also ready to fight. The film is budgeted at around $75 million.
