Butler recently starred on Riverdale as Reggie, but left the show to play Zach Dempsey for season 2 of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. DC Films Hub reports that Butler will play the older version of Ian Chen’s Eugene Choi. They also report that Adam Brody has been cast to play the older version of Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman and D.J. Cotrona will play the older version Jovan Armand’s Pedro Pena.

The film follows young Billy Baston (Asher Angel) who is able to transform into a superhero, played by Zachary Levi, by saying “Shazam!” Shazam is an acronym for the six immortal elders; Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. Shazam embodies the powers of all six to become one hero.

David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) is directing New Line’s latest superhero flick. The film was scripted by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Annabelle: Creation producer Peter Safran is producing here as well. Principal photography has been taking place in Toronto since January.

Shazam! is expected to be released on April 5th 2019.
