Director Victoria Mahoney is set to join  J.J. Abrams on Star Wars: Episode IX.

The announcement was made by Oscar winning Director Ava DuVernay, who is one of Mahoney’s good friends and has worked with her on the TV series Queen Sugar. Mahoney is most well known for directing TV series such as many episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and the pilot episode for Freeform’s Misfits.

Although she is not the film’s main director, Mahoney’s hiring as the second unit director is a historic moment in Star Wars history. It seems that many Star Wars execs have been listening to many fans who have been begging for a minority to step into a creative role in the Star Wars Franchise.

Star Wars Episode IX is set to release in theaters on December 20, 2019.
