On March 31, 1995 we lost the Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. 23 years have gone by and her legacy still lives on. From her music to her fashion sense, Selena has gone onto inspire the lives of many including myself. Today would have been her 47th birthday and I would like to celebrate her legacy with the song of the day. For that I have chosen one of my favorite songs ‘Enamorada De Ti’. Written and produced by her brother A.B. Quintanilla among with writing from Pete Astudillo.
‘Enamorada De Ti’ comes off of Selena Y Los Dinos 1990 album Ven Conmigo. Better known for its hit lead single ‘Baila Esta Cumbia’ which was certified six times platinum. Ven Conmigo was also the groups first album to go gold.
Fun fact: the Ven Conmigo album cover was shot in black and white because Selena dyed her hair jet black the day before the photo shoot and got some of the ink on her face. If you look hard enough you can kind of see it.
In my opinion ‘Enamorada De Ti’ has that distinct 90s vibe to it. From the melody to the drums, everything screams 90s which makes it stand out from many other tracks on the album that follow the more traditional sound blueprint. Selena said that she was inspired by Janet Jackson and I can definitely hear it on this record. A.B. did a phenomenal job of capturing Janet while making it Selena. The mix of tejano and R&B on this song is beautiful. I would highly recommend that you listen to it if you already haven’t. And if you ever get the chance, I would suggest that you look up her performing it live, she was an extraordinary performer.
23 years later and we still and always will love and listen to the Queen of Tejano music. Her legacy lives on. R.I.P La Reina Selena Quintanilla-Pérez April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995.
