Rumor: ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Renewed For Sixth Season

ABC is rumored to have renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for season 6, keeping its flagship Marvel TV series around for 2019.

Continuing the story of Phil Coulson after the events of The Avengers, the series premiered in Fall 2013 to solid fanfare and record ratings, but the show’s viewership dwindled in its first season. Since then, the show has built a dedicated fan base, with those who’ve stuck around agreeing that the show has only gotten better with each season.

Season 5 finds the team on a space station almost a century in the future, as they attempt to stop the Earth from breaking apart. The team returned to Earth in the present day, only to find new threats while trying to change the timeline. While the series is currently halfway through its fifth season, fans have wondered whether or not it would reach season 6.

MovieTVTechGeeks is reporting that they have confirmation of a season six renewal from three sources at Disney, ABC, and the production team. However, this report should be taken with a grain of salt, as ABC has not announced pickups for it’s upcoming season.

In the past, the series’ renewal has always been questionable, with low but decent ratings, but not on the same level as the network’s other shows. Last year, the series did get a season 5 renewal, though it was later revealed that parent company Disney mandated that the show be renewed, according to Variety.

The series recently reached its landmark 100th episode in March, and the season 5 finale is set to air on May 18 on ABC. With the series also being the network’s only Marvel TV series currently on the air, a renewal seems possible, though Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen told Entertainment Weekly that the season’s final episode is being written as a series finale, as they aren’t sure of a renewal either.
