“On My Block” has been renewed for a second season by Netflix.
The show was co-created by executive producers Lauren Iungerich (Awkward), Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft and stars Diego Tinoco, Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Ronnie Hawk. The series is a coming of age about four friends living in LA’s South Central neighborhood, navigating the space that is high- school, exploring friendship, love, and the complexities of their realities.
Premiering March 16, the series is unapologetic in its storytelling with characters who are witty and flawed with a touch of 80’s humor. All aspects which have the series well on its way to being a hit. ‘On My Block’ is loosely based on the show’s co-creator Eddie Gonzalez’s childhood while growing up in Compton, California. Gonzales said “Ruby. That was me, this is the story of my childhood. I grew up in a large Mexican-American family and a lot of what he’s experiencing I experienced.”
The series not only defies boundaries in its storytelling but diverse casting. In terms of the conversations and the effect of the series, Gonzalez hopes to push the envelope. In an interview, he states, “We don’t need to be saved, we need to be heard”.
