Diego Luna And Gael García Bernal Launch New Production Company

Mexican film stars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have founded a new film and television production company, La Corriente del Golfo, per Deadline. The announcement comes after the news that the duo would be exiting Canana Films, the company that they founded 14 years ago.

The company’s first projects will be Chicuarotes, a film directed by García Bernal, and Aquí En La Tierra a thriller television series by García Bernal and Kyzza Terrazas. Chicuarotes will be García Bernal’s second feature as director, with the Spanish-language film currently in post-production after wrapping earlier this year in Mexico City. The film follows two young friends who, in their desperation to leave the peublo, get caught up in the nefarious activities of adults.

Luna, who recently starred in Rogue One as Cassian Andor, said, “The beauty of telling stories for a living is that we are constantly reflected in them and simultaneously forging our own. Today we announce another effort to tell the stories that we wish to hear. Thanks to the friendship we have always shared, Gael and I are undertaking a new path that is one of creative freedom and shared ideals. From Mexico, we will allow ourselves to be carried by this new current to wherever our stories and new associations may take us.”

García Bernal and Luna, who first starred together in 2001’s Y Tu Mamá También, have since gone on to have respected acting careers in both the United States and Mexico. García Bernal could recently be heard in Pixar’s Coco as the voice of Héctor, which won Best Animated Feature at this year’s Oscars.
