The need for more female led action films in Hollywood has been an important topic for a while. The David Leitch directed film Atomic Blonde was definitely a step in the right direction. The film starred Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron and became critically acclaimed for its gritty action sequences and the performances from Theron and James McAvoy.
The ending of the film definitely set up a possibility for a franchise and while speaking at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Theron confirmed those plans with a very short answer:
“We’re working on a sequel”
Obviously, that answer doesnt give us much to go by but it at least confirms the studios aspirations to continue to the story of Theron’s character which could potentially serve as the answer to many male dominated action franchises like John Wick and James Bond. It is unknown if David Leitch will return to direct.
