Guillermo del Toro Signs Deal With Fox Searchlight

Academy Award-winner Guillermo del Toro has signed a deal with Fox Searchlight Pictures that will cover any live-action feature film that he produces, writes, and/or directs. The Mexican filmmaker will be working with the studio’s new, untitled label where sci-fi, horror, and fantasy projects will be developed, as well as marketed and financed.

Given the success of his award-winning film The Shape of Water (which he worked with Fox Searchlight on) this is not really a surprise. Fox Searchlight Pictures presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley were the ones to announce the news, and they seemed pretty thrilled about the deal in the statement:

“Throughout the process of The Shape of Water coming to life, we have observed first-hand Guillermo at work as a director, a writer, a producer — a creator. We believe in him and the vision for a new Searchlight label and we are eager to embark on this journey with him,”

Guillermo seems excited as well, here’s what he had to say about the partnership:

“For the longest time, I’ve hoped to find an environment in which I can distribute, nurture, and produce new voices in smart, inventive genre films and channel my own. In Fox Searchlight, I’ve found a real home for live-action production — a partnership based on hard work, understanding of each other and, above all, faith. After the wonderful experience I had with Fox Searchlight on ‘The Shape of Water,’ I am honored to have the opportunity to continue the relationship.”

Following The Shape of Water, their next project together will be a film titled Antlers–a story about an elementary school teacher who tries to help a seemingly troubled student with a deadly family secret. It will be directed by Scott Cooper, and the script is based on Nick Antosca’s short story The Quiet Boy. Antosca himself is writing the script alongside Henry Chaisson. J. Miles Dale is attached as producer, with Kevin Turen executive producing.
