The novel follows Ruby (played by Stenberg) who’s survived a mysterious disease that’s killed 98% of America’s children, and is sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp”. Labeled as threats and isolated from the adult population, Ruby and several others have become gifted with abilities that they cannot control, abilities which make them not only powerful but dangerous to the rest of the world.

After realizing her power, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. On the run, and desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her, she joins a group of kids (Liam, Chubs, and Zu) who have escaped their own camps; but when they finally reach their destination nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. Produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen (the team also behind Stranger Things and Arrival), the film explores themes of power, isolation, and independence.
