3 ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin Off Ideas HBO Should Really Consider
At a panel titled “The Best of HBO”, Francesca Orsi, HBO senior VP of drama, stated the network has budgeted the Game of Thrones spin-offs near the level of the original series, and above the budget GoT had in its first few seasons.
She goes on to say “$50 million (per season) would never fly for what we are trying to do. We are going big”. Read more of the interview here
If anything, it’s apparent that HBO isn’t playing any games with this spin-off. But what would make a good Game of Thrones spin-off? The universe is full of many stories that would be great for a spin-off. Most of these stories the show has not even touched on the potential.
Let’s look at 3 arcs from the Game of Thrones universe that would make a great spin-off!
THE ADVENTURES OF DUNK AND EGG
This would be the obvious choice for a spin-off since a book already exists about their adventures. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg.
The Duos’ adventures take place about a century before the events of Game of Thrones. We follow their friendship from the very beginning. This puts us in a very interesting time in the history of Westeros because their adventures weave in and out with the Blackfyre Rebellion and the Targaryen family squabbles. Martin has also made comments that he intends to add another entry to the saga of the duo.
AEGON’S CONQUEST OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS
This is the story I would most like to see. Just imagine the glory of watching Aegon and his GIANT dragons conquer the world. Set over 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones places us in a time where the seven kingdoms were not united but each ruled by its own powerful ruler. Aegon saw fit to change that and sent out word to all the lords to either bend the knee or burn. To be able to see Aegon on his quest and to see him eventually succeed and crown himself the first King of the Seven Kingdom would make for amazing television.
THE HISTORY OF THE NIGHT’S WATCH

Source: HBO
A series that goes into the establishment of the Night’s Watch and Chronicles its early difficulties would be spectacular. This would get the showroom to delve into more detail about the Night King, the Children of the Forest, and even life beyond the wall back then as well as the construction (?) of the wall.
It is revealed in the show that the Children of the Forest created the Night King as a way to defend themselves from man. The Night King even ruled briefly after his creation, his time in power is vague, but it was said to be a reign of terror. The Night King’s rule was put to an end by the unifying of the Starks and the Wildling King. This is a story that is all too familiar with the current Game of Thrones events and would be cool to see fleshed out in a completely different way against the same enemy.
