Supernatural has always been at its best when it goes meta and leans hard into its comedic aspects.

It went all in on those elements with this week’s ScoobyNatural mash up. Yes, the Winchesters, Castiel and the Scooby Gang team up to solve a mystery.

We jump right into the silly with the boys fighting a demonically possessed giant plush dinosaur. After destroying the cursed object, the pawn shop owner gives the guys a free TV, which immediately transports them into a Scooby Doo cartoon.

Dean is instantly ok with everything, while Sam is confused and wants out.

Supernatural can be quite adult at times, so it’s hilarious to see the show balance its regular tone with that of a children’s show.

As expected from a Scooby episode, the gang must spend the night in a haunted mansion so they can win a share of $1 million.

Dean has seen this one thousands of times and knows how it’s all supposed to play out. Unfortunately, things take an unexpected turn when one of the guests is actually killed.

Dean’s unabashed enthusiasm brings out a fun side we haven’t gotten to see in a long time, and it’s nice to be reminded of carefree, jokester Dean.

Cas shows up and reveals that he was also sucked into the TV by purple sparks and Sam realizes this is all connected back to the pawn shop.

As it turns out, the animation allows the show to be even gorier, if that’s possible.

If there’s a flaw in this team up, it’s that things go a little too far into the cartoon. The Scooby chase scene was silly, and Dean constantly hitting on Daphne distracted from the story.

Although, the Scooby Gang having a breakdown after finding out there’s a supernatural world and an afterlife was ridiculous and funny.

In the end, it did have a Scooby finish, as an evil real estate developer was using the ghost of an innocent child to kill people so he could buy their property cheap. He would’ve got away with it, if it wasn’t for those meddling kids.

It’s always great when Supernatural takes a break from the doom and gloom for these standalone comedy episodes.

It keeps the audience from going on emotional overload from all the death and destruction. Of course, next week it’s back to saving the world again.
