For many of us midterms/mid-semester exams have either just ended or are just beginning. Even if you’re currently not in school (don’t feel bad), it’s also sick season where often times we’re so busy with New Year’s resolutions and the weight of our live, that the stress we put on ourselves starts to catch up with us. But in the end we make it through the hard times while narrowly escaping hitting rock bottom. And that brings us right to today’s song of the day, Paramore – “Hard Times.”
“Hard times, Gonna make you wonder why you even try
Hard times, Gonna take you down and laugh when you cry
These lives, And I still don’t know how I even survive”
“Hard Times” is the lead single from Paramore’s 2017 album titled After Laughter. The album took us back to the 80s but with a modern twist. The lyrics of “Hard Times” aren’t the happiest of lyrics I’ve read. However, I feel that they just don’t sugar coat how hard life can really get sometimes. Some artists would choose to highlight all of the good times (which isn’t a bad thing) and little to none of the times where we question and doubt ourselves. I love how Paramore decided to confront what I interpreted as our daily problems and struggles over a upbeat backtrack. I’ve never had so much fun listening to a track that attacks the depressing times of life head on.
The music video is by far one of the most creative I’ve seen in recent years. Bright lights, clouds, cars and a backpack full of emotional baggage. I would highly recommend that you listen to “Hard Times” if you already haven’t. While you’re at it, take a listen to the rest of the album. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, however I would like to warn you: Once you’re done listening to After Laughter you’ll start having so many questions. The main one being, “WHY wasn’t this masterpiece nominated for several/all of the Grammys????”. Proceed with caution, and Happy Tuesday.
Paramore’s album After Laughter is available to be streamed on Spotify and purchased on iTunes.
