Nintendo Announces ‘Super Smash Bros.’ and ‘Splatoon 2’ Competitions for E3

On the heels of their massive announcement of the new Super Smash Bros., Nintendo has announced a Smash Switch invitational for E3 this year. For the last few years, Nintendo has used their presence at E3 for advertising their games through eSports tournaments.

The event will showcase livestreamed competitions between players from around the world. The Smash Bros. Invitational will be combined with a Splatoon 2 championship, showcasing the first world championship after the game’s launch.

Prior to the championship, Nintendo will host online qualifiers for the US and Canada in Splatoon 2’s Turf War mode from April 21 to April 28. Qualifiers in other regions have already begun. As for Smash Bros., Nintendo is contacting an undisclosed number of professional players to compete with each other in the new game.

The competition itself will take place from June 11-12, just in time for Nintendo’s E3 showcase from June 12-14, where players will get to enjoy Smash 5, Splatoon 2, and many other recent and upcoming games. According to Bill Trinen, Nintendo’s senior product marketing manager, this is just the beginning of Nintendo’s announcements for this year’s E3.
