Good news for all you book geeks out there!  Geeks of Color will be spotlighting a book each month, and we are so excited to be kicking this off during Women’s History Month.  We will be spotlighting and recommending books of all genres that are written by authors of color.

It being Women’s History Month, our book of the month for March is Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde.

If you aren’t already familiar with Audre Lorde, you definitely should read some of her works. Lorde was a black woman, a lesbian, a mother, a writer, and in a mixed race relationship. Because of this, all of her pieces provide an extremely unique and always interesting feminist perspective.

In Sister Outsider, a collection of essays, she uses her perspective and voice as a queer black woman to challenge sexism, racism, homophobia, elitism, and the importance of empowering women of color in all ways.  Here is a quote from the book to get you hooked!

“Women of today are still being called upon to stretch across the gap of male ignorance and to educate men as to our existence and our needs. This is an old and primary tool of all oppressors to keep the oppressed occupied with the master’s concerns. This is a diversion of energies and a tragic repetition of racist patriarchal thought.”
