The Geeks of Color Meet Up at #SXSWedu Schedule #UnofficialConduct

This Weekend the Geeks of Color team is bringing the city together like never before with an event where Austinites and travelers can join intriguing discussions led by industry experts, artists can share their work, and art-lovers can discover pieces that inspire. For all those foodies out there searching for their favorite local cuisine in food truck fashion, there is no need to look further. This event was designed with your entertainment in mind, so even the marketplace has the variety you crave.

You already know we have to give the DJs some love as well. Each day will feature the hottest DJs who will keep that energy going throughout the day. The best food, music, art, and entertainment the city has to offer will be at The Meet Up Austin. Can’t wait to see you there! ITS FREE.

Panel #1 : Who is GOC?  

Time: 10:00-11:15 AM

The Geeks of Color team will host an icebreaker panel for those who might not know who we are. Brief discussion about our origin story and where we are now and what are plans are for the future. With a short Q&A short meet and greet before the importance of nerd communities for People of Color

Panel #2 : Importance of Nerd Communities for People of Color

Nerd communities have always existed and excluded people of color for years. Now is the time to take ownership of your nerdy behavior and shine like you were meant to.

This panel will be an in depth talk with, Evan Narcisse, the current writer of the Rise of the Black Panther miniseries. The will discuss the importance of diversity in comicbooks and how we need more authentic  voices writings the stories.

The GOC Meet up Happy Hour

Time: 6:00 -8:00pm

A Networking and meet up event with geeks of color team and other panelist. There will be food and drinks available to purchase. We will also be playing overwatch and other video games!


Panel #1: The Dorian Parks Show

Time: 10:00 – 11:15 Am

Founder and EIC of Geeks of Color, Dorian Parks will be taping the first episode of his podcast which will be about his journey, college, internships and content creation. Followed by a short Q&A. With a special announcement at the end of it.

Panel #2 :Women of Color Who Are Disrupting the Entertainment Industry!

Time: 11:45-1:00 PM

Moderater – J’neia Stewart.

This panel will talk about women who are using their platforms to disrupt change in the Entertainment Industry. We will discuss the challenges they’ve faced, what they think could be done better and advice for other women on how to make change.
