#SOTD: Sade – Flower of the Universe
This is quite possibly some of the best music related news that I’ve heard this year, after seven long years Sade has returned with a new song. Her new soundtrack ‘Flower of the Universe’ for Disney’s upcoming movie “A Wrinkle in Time” was released just this past Tuesday.
We first learned of the news on February 20th, when Ava DuVernay tweeted her initial shock of Sade agreeing to being on the soundtrack. She tweeted, “ I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget. Proud to announce that Sade has created an original song for WRINKLE IN TIME. It’s entitled “Flower of the Universe.” And it’s a dream come true.”. So in addition to being on the soundtrack Sade gave us an original song (I’m not crying you are!).
The song itself is a gorgeous melodic pleasure. It incorporates a brand new feeling but has that classic Sade sound. However, upon first listening I initially thought of a lullaby. The soft guitar playing in the background and Sade’s soothing voice put together gives a serene feeling. The feeling you get when you’re comfortable in your safe place wherever that may be.
I love Sade’s lyricism in this one. I think that she really captures the picture in song form perfectly. When she says;
When you sleep softly the angels come
Like diamonds, like my love
They want to know it’s true
There’s someone in the world, lovely as you
From what I have seen of the promotion of the film, this is a direct hit. Plus, all in all it is a beautiful excerpt. I love when you can take a piece of music meant for a movie and apply it to real life, and ‘Flower of the Universe’ is one of those songs. I highly recommend that you take a listen.
P.S. “A Wrinkle in Time” comes out March TOMORROW (today if you’re seeing it early). Please go see it if you get the chance.
Sade’s single is available to be streamed on Spotify and purchased on iTunes.
