Jon Favreau to Write and Executive Produce Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ TV Series

Last year it was announced that Disney was developing a live-action television series set in a galaxy far, far away, and that would be exclusive to the company’s streaming service that’s launching in 2019. Disney confirmed that Jon Favreau has signed on as executive producer and writer for the series in a statement put out by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platformJon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.

Favreau is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, as he has previously played roles in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and he has a role in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. In a statement he made it clear that he is just as excited as any Star Wars fan would be:

If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.

Disney is reportedly working on “a few” Star Wars series for its streaming service, so this announcement is only the beginning. Favreau has been working closely with Disney for a while now, with films like Iron Man, The Jungle Book and the upcoming live-action Lion King under his belt. Not many details have been released about the Star Wars series, other than the studio is eyeing a late 2019 release date.
