Girls Trip screenwriter wrote the adaptation, which will star Yara Shahidi.
Based on the New York Times best-seller from Nicola Yoon, the film centers on Natasha (Shahidi), a girl in New York City whose pragmatism is challenged when she falls in love right before her family is set to be deported back to Jamaica.
Warner Bros and MGM bought the rights to the novel, they previously adapted Yoon’s debut, Everything, Everything. Amandla Stenberg played the lead, and Stella Meghie directed.
Russo-Young’s previous directing jobs includes the adaptation of Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall, and indie drama Nobody Walks.
Yoon has expressed her approval of the directing and casting for the adaptation.
I’m a big fan of Ry Russo-Young’s work, especially Before I Fall and Nobody Walks. She’s incredibly perceptive and smart. Her passion for this project is infectious and inspiring. I’m also thrilled for the perspective she brings as a female director. And then there’s Yara Shahidi! Having her play Natasha is an absolute dream choice for me! Yara’s such an incredibly talented and generous actress. She imbues her roles with warmth and intelligence and humor.
Everything Everything producers, Les Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz are back producing for Alloy Entertainment.
The Sun Is Also a Star is set to release May 17, 2019.
