New ‘The Last Airbender’ Comics from Dark Horse

Back in 2008, Avatar: The Last Airbender, the beloved animated series, sadly came to an end. Thankfully, they’ve continued the adventures of the original Team Avatar through graphic novels from Dark Horse, and there doesn’t seem like they’re planning on stopping anytime soon.

This Fall, two brand new graphic novels will be published, adding on to the existing storylines. One of them will follow the original story, and the other will be a one-shot anthology comic.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Imbalance Part One will see the debut of writer Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City) and artist Peter Wartman, who will be taking over the series from longtime Avatar comics writer Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese). The new creators will still be following suit and collaborating with series co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. This first part of the new trilogy will find Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph in a conflict between benders and non-benders in a booming industrial town. We are speculating that the new conflict will narrow the gap between The Last Airbender and its sequel series, Legend of Korra.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Team Avatar Tales will be a one-shot anthology comic, featuring stories from multiple different creators. In addition to Yang and Hicks, other contributors include Carla Speed McNeil (Finder), Ron Koertge (Vampire Planet), Dave Scheidt (Dreamworks TrollsWrapped Up), and Sara Goetter (Dungeon CrittersBoozle). The stories will vary from adventures and serious reflections on deeper issues.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – Imbalance Part One goes on sale October 10, but Avatar: The Last Airbender – Team Avatar Tales will be out a month sooner on September 5.
