Famous author, Ta-Nehisi Coates, is ready to confront the American Dream head-on alongside Captain America in its new series of issues starting this summer.

Mostly known in the comic world for his work with T’Challa in the Black Panther series of 2016 and it’s subsequent spin-offs Black Panther and the Crew and Black Panther: World of Wakanda (which was written by Roxane Gay and had Coates’ consultation, focusing on female characters), Coates will now be writing Marvel’s most patriotic superhero: Captain America, featuring art from Leinil Yu and covers from Alex Ross.

Captain America wears the image of the American Dream as his costume, and in his previous writings, Coates has interrogated what’s the American Dream and whether its mythic promise is reserved only for white citizens:

“I tell you now that the question of how one should live within a black body, within a country lost in the Dream, is the question of my life,” he wrote in Between the World and Me, an award-winning book where Coates explained his experience in America’s racial oppression to his son.

In a statement shared in The Atlantic, where he publishes his opinion journalism, Coates repeated that same question and explained why he’s so excited to write such an iconic character.

“Writing, for me, is about questions—not answers. And Captain America, the embodiment of a kind of Lincolnesque optimism, poses a direct question for me: Why would anyone believe in The Dream? What is exciting here is not some didactic act of putting my words in Captain America’s head, but attempting to put Captain America’s words in my head. What is exciting is the possibility of exploration, of avoiding the repetition of a voice I’ve tired of.”

“I’m not convinced I can tell a great Captain America story—which is precisely why I want so bad to try.”
