Janelle Monáe’s Long Awaited Triumphant Return

After a five-year hiatus from the music scene to focus on her acting work, Janelle Monáe is finally returning with a new album, Dirty Computer, due out April 27th.

Yesterday she released music videos from her up and coming album, “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane”.

“Make Me Feel” is an electrifying blast from the past that gives us both the now and then. I definitely hear the Prince influence and I love it. It gives us a refreshed but classic “Kiss” sound. With a smooth melody and nostalgic vibes, you can’t just listen to it once. I won’t give spoilers for the music video because it’s nothing you can describe. You just have to see it for yourself.

As for “Django Jane”, Janelle really brings the heat with this fiery track that gives us a lot to think about. She discusses many issues that have been happening and continue to happen because of backwards thinking. A favorite quote of mine would be:

Black girl magic, y’all can’t stand it

Y’all can’t ban it, made out like a bandit

They been trying hard just to make us all vanish

I suggest they put a flag on a whole ‘nother planet

It’s straight to the point and doesn’t hold back on the inevitable truth. The music video is another one that’s too good to describe. You’ll just have to watch it. (Do you sense the pattern? I want you to WATCH the music videos. Please?) But I will say this, she sits upon a throne, right where she belongs.

Along with this highly anticipated album, Janelle will also be releasing an Emotion Picture (tie-in narrative film), to be released at a later date. I can already tell that this album will be one to remember.
