Olympian Jin Boyang from China Skated to a Star Wars Medley
The 2018 Winter Olympics are underway and ice skating is a popular event for many to watch. For the skaters, inspiration for their routines can come from many places. Oftentimes, skaters will dance to classical songs but sometimes, choreography and music inspiration from a galaxy far, far away.
Jin Boyang representing China performed his free skate to a medley of Star Wars soundtrack songs that spanned from the original trilogy to Rogue One. Most noticeably that can be heard is the iconic Darth Vader breathing and “Cantina Band.”
You can watch his full performance here at the official NBC website.
While Star Wars is not immensely popular in China, it certainly caught the internet’s attention and had many galactic fans enthusiastically watching his performance. And this isn’t the first time Jin has used nerdy movie soundtracks in his performances; he used the Spider Man soundtrack for a previous short program in 2016.
At the end of the round, Jin Boyang almost used enough force to claim the bronze but it just barely slipped away. But it’s nice to know that even Olympians can be geeks of color too.
