TBS Orders Comedy Pilot From Lena Waithe Titled ‘Twenties’
It looks like Lena Waithe has plans to take over 2018. High off of her historical Emmy win and getting a season 2 renewal for her new series on Showtime, The Chi — TBS has ordered a pilot written and created by Waithe called Twenties.
The single-camera comedy series will center on a queer black girl named Hattie and her two, straight best friends Marie and Nia, who spend most of their days “talking shit and chasing their dreams”. Here’s what Waithe had to say about the show:
“I wrote Twenties back in 2009. I always wanted to tell a story where a queer Black girl was the protagonist and I’m so grateful to TBS for giving me a platform to tell this story. Queer Black characters have been the sidekick for long enough, it’s time for us to finally take the lead.”
It’s awesome to see more mainstream shows beginning to feature LGBT characters as leads. Does this sound like a show you can get behind? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
