Mary J. Blige to Play ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Villain

Singer/actress Mary J. Blige is continuing her relationship with Netflix by signing on to join the cast of its comic book series The Umbrella Academy.

Blige will play time traveling assassin Cha-Cha. She is fully devoted to her job and is described as ” sadistic, sociopathic, and her reputation precedes her.”

The live action series follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) – Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Vanya (Ellen Page), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) – as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.

Blige is nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role as the strong matriarch of a farming family during WWII in Mudbound.

The Umbrella Academy is based on Dark Horse’s graphic novel from writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá.
