War Machine Solo Film by ‘Black Panther’ Screenwriter, Joe Robert Cole Was Considered by Marvel Studios

Black Panther is a less than a week away and it’s already tracking for a huge box office return. But the film’s most important element is most definitely the fact that it is the first film in the 10-year history of Marvel Studios to be led by a person of color.

But it wasn’t too long ago that Marvel considered another film to be their first led by a person of color in the MCU with: War Machine. Black Panther Screenwriter, Joe Robert Cole recently spoke with Complex and revealed that he pitched a concept that won and was tasked with writing the screenplay.

Cole said, “I had written a Chinatown-style cop script and they met with me about it. At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie. I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren’t going to do War Machine anymore. But they asked if I’d be interested in joining their writer’s program instead.”

Even though the film did not happen, would you have liked to see War Machine in a solo flick? Be sure to let us know in the comment section below.

You can catch Don Cheadle reprising his role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, which hits theaters on May 4.
