Overwatch League Is Kicking off Today with a Two-Year Twitch Exclusivity Deal
The first day of the Overwatch League is finally here! Today at 6 pm CST the Overwatch league kicks off with the San Fransisco Shock going toe to toe with the Los Angeles Valiant, and Twitch has some major news on how you can keep up with the inaugural season.
On their blog, Twitch made the announcement that their platform will be the exclusive broadcaster of all Overwatch League matches for the next two years. With the exception of Blizzard’s website, Twitch will be the only place to watch regular-season, playoff and even championship matches.
Backed by the money from their acquisition by Amazon in 2014, Twitch has reportedly paid over $90 million dollars to earn this exclusivity deal. A cost well worth it for the development of the first esports league comparable to the NFL or NBA.
Twitch also mentioned that they intend to continue working with Blizzard to provide Twitch users with exclusive in-game rewards. Along with custom Overwatch League Cheermotes so fans can root for their favorite teams.
You can catch the season’s premiere match tonight over at twitch.tv/overwatchleague. Want someone to talk Overwatch league with but Twitch chat moves a bit too fast for you? Come over to our Discord to watch-a-long and chat with the Geeks of Color Community!
