While not a direct sequel to the 1995 original, the movie does include a few Easter eggs that call back to the first film and its star Robin Williams.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has had continued growth since the new year, performing surprisingly well against Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Domestically it has made $245 million.
It started 2018 in the No. 1 spot, taking in $37.2 million and finishing ahead of Insidious: The Last Key and The Last Jedi.
The movie isn’t facing tough competition in the next two weeks, so its success could continue until The Maze Runner: The Death Cure opens Jan. 26.
