Jodie Whittaker Makes her ‘Doctor Who’ Debut During Christmas Special
Earlier this year it was announced that Peter Capaldi’s last Doctor Who episode would air on December 25, and that Jodie Whittaker would take over as the 13th Doctor in the long-running BBC series. It is the first time in the show’s history that the Doctor regenerates into a woman, and she was introduced in the final moments of the series’ Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time”.
Capaldi is departing the series after a four-year run playing the iconic character, and he had previously voiced his support for a female Doctor in the future. The episode was written by main writer and showrunner Steven Moffat, who is also leaving the series after eight years.
During the final moments of the special, Jodie’s Doctor realizes she is now a woman and happily mutters the words “Oh brilliant!” before being thrown into space. Whittaker will be leading Doctor Who’s eleventh season along with Chris Chibnall, who will be taking over as main writer and executive producer.
