Issa Rae to Produce Sci-fi Dystopian Drama ‘The Awoken’
What can’t Issa Rae do?
First, she developed the hit HBO show, Insecure, the drama that leaves fans wanting more every week. Recently it was announced that she’s developing a show about the life of a bisexual black man (as she has tackled the concept of sexuality on Insecure many times).
Now, this wonder woman is pitching the dystopian series The Awoken to broadcasters and streaming services according to Deadline. Rae is producing the series in light of introducing a diverse writers’ initiative through her production company ColorCreative TV.
The sci-fi drama follows Alabine Rivers, after being resurrected from a cryogenically frozen state in 2103, joins the Awoken group to fight for basic human rights. Katelyn Howes created this project, winning the Fresh Wave initiative when she beat 2,000 entries in the race to find diverse television writers in underrepresented groups in society.
Funded by Talos Film and Sky Vision, a ten-minute pilot of the series was shown to potential buyers during an event in Hollywood on December 13th.
Lastly, we have to give huge congratulations to Howe for winning the competition, and a big thank you to Rae who puts so much work into making sure underrepresented groups are heard.
Looking forward to seeing how this series will play out? Let us know in the comments below!
