Clark Kent’s Return Won’t Be Explained In Future DCEU Films

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Justice League so if you haven’t seen it, be careful reading this article or avoid it completely.

Justice League gave us many things, like the union of one of the most iconic teams DC Comics has, the first incarnation on the big screen for Cyborg, Flash and Aquaman and the return of Superman from the dead.

For those of you who don’t remember, Clark Kent -a.k.a. Kal-El, a.k.a. Superman, a.k.a. the last son of Krypton- died for humanity at the end of Batman V Superman at the hands of Doomsday by a Kryptonite spear, with the movie giving us a heartfelt funeral for both Superman and Clark, one of them with the entire world seeing and the other in Smallville, Kansas.

While Justice League gave us -and the world- Superman back by reviving him using the Mother Boxes, and a beautiful final scene with Clark walking into an alley while showing his Superman suit, there was no explanation whatsoever as to how Clark Kent’s return to life was even possible, as he was reported “killed while reporting Gotham Battle.”

While we’ve been questioning how that was explained to anyone other than Martha Kent or Lois Lane, Henry Cavill -the man responsible for bringing Clark to life in the DCEU- said in his most recent appearance at ACE Comic-Con that his next appearance as the hero in blue tights won’t particularly explore that, as it is not something that really needs explaining at all.

“It’s a tricky one. The wonderful thing about movies is that it’s a suspension of disbelief. We’re talking about a guy who can fly, who can shoot lasers out of his eyes. And so there are ways of doing it but telling these stories, it’s about your enjoyment. It’s about my enjoyment. It’s about enjoyment for the viewer. And so we can spend four hours of a movie explaining why and how Clark comes back. But is that what you want to see?”

If you asked me, I’d say yes, but the fan who asked the question, instead, responded with a clear and absolute “No,” to which Henry then added, “No, that’s right.”

Then, half joking half serious, Cavill said that if it was in his hands, he would explain every aspect of Clark/Superman life.

“If I had billions and billions and billions of dollars and I could make six movies a year all based on Superman, yeah, we would go through that.”

While right now it is uncertain whether we will see Henry Cavill playing Superman on the big screen for one more time, as Warner is planning to change the future of their Universe, he has said in various interviews and red carpet appearances that he has one more film in his “Superman contract”, so as his character represents, hope is the last thing that dies.

However, the latest DCEU film slate does not include Man of Steel 2, a film that has been rumoured to be in development for quite some time, so we’ll just have to be patient as more news

What do you think about this news? Would you like Clark’s return fully explained in a Man of Steel sequel or would you rather they focus on something else?
