Golden Globe Nomination Surprises, Snubs
Guillermo Del Toro’s The Shape of Water continues its domination over awards season with seven Golden Globe nominations. Steven Spielberg’s star-studded The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri received six nods each.
The three films will compete for best motion picture drama against Call Me By Your Name and Dunkirk.
Not making the cut were Logan and Wonder Woman for best drama or Thor: Ragnarok for best comedy. While the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t usually nominate superhero films. They can occasionally be swayed by star power and box office. The Golden Globes were also the test on whether the movies had a shot at The Oscars.
Guess they’ll just have to console themselves with their huge box office success.
Get Out, The Greatest Showman, I, Tonya, Lady Bird and The Disaster Artist were nominated for best picture musical or comedy. The Greatest Showman is something of a surprise, but as the only big studio musical, it was really the only one eligible.
Despite its nomination for best motion picture, Get Out’s Jordan Peele was not recognized in the writing or directing categories. Seems weird that it could be one of the best pictures of the year without the best writing and directing.
In the acting categories, it’s mostly familiar names except for one big surprise in Ansel Elgort’s nomination for best actor musical or comedy for Baby Driver.
On the TV side, the best drama series category is a battle of the titans with The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, This is Us, Stranger Things and Game of Thrones duking it out.
Even though it’s nominated for best drama series, Game of Thrones didn’t receive any nods in the acting categories. The cast usually submits itself in supporting categories and the Golden Globes lump all supporting performances into one category, so perhaps that left the cast out in the cold.
The best musical or comedy series contest is where the real surprise of the nominations are, as perennial favorites Veep, Modern Family, Transparent and Orange is the New Black were all left off the list in favor of Blackish, Master of None, SMILF, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Will and Grace. It should be noted that the Golden Globes has a history of recognizing new TV shows.
Though Insecure didn’t receive a nod for comedy series, Issa Rae was nominated for best actress in a musical or comedy series.
Seth Meyers hosts the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday, Jan. 7 at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT on NBC.
What do you think is the biggest Golden Globes snub?
