Daredevil & The Defenders Writer Developing Netflix’s The Witcher Series

Very little is known about Netflix’s impending adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series, but Variety reports the show now has a showrunner and executive producer. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, whose work should be familiar to fans of Netflix’s Daredevil and The Defenders, will develop the project alongside Sean Daniel, Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko, all of whom are also serving in executive producer roles.

The announcement for The Witcher television series surfaced in May of this year and brought with it very few details. Sapkowski’s role will be that of a creative consultant. Baginski, director of the intro segments for all three of CD Projekt Red’s game adaptations, is helming at least one episode in the series.

The world of The Witcher’s first rise to fame is thanks to a collection of Sapkowski’s short stories in the 1980s. With the release of a series of books, the first being the collection entitled The Last Wish, just over a decade later, the franchise began to cement itself as a Polish national treasure. This high regard eventually embedded itself into gaming, when Polish studio CD Projekt Red developed the first Witcher title, which has since been followed by two critically acclaimed and commercially successful sequels.

Presently, casting details and a release date have yet to be announced.
