Every year, TIME Magazine chooses a person of the year. The person (or movement) that is chosen is typically one that has made headlines and is a standout in their respective field (good or bad).

This year, the publication has announced the Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins and professional athlete and philanthropist, Colin Kaepernick have been short listed for Person of the Year.

It’s been quite the year for both Jenkins and Kaepernick. The pair came into the spotlight for differing reasons in 2017, but both showed the world that with the right amount of hard work and perseverance, you can make a change.

For Jenkins, this came in the form of changing the minds of the predominantly white, straight, male machine known as Hollywood. Directing one of the best films of 2017, Jenkins broke records at every turn and became the highest-paid female director after signing on to sign the Wonder Woman sequel, proving that women directors indeed have an important place in Hollywood and can most certainly tackle a multi-million dollar superhero film.

Kaepernick made headlines when he began a peaceful protest that consisted of kneeling during the national anthem in an effort to shed light on police brutality and racism. Since his outspoken stance, the talented quarterback hasn’t been able to secure a spot on any NFL team. However, Kaepernick continued to speak out about the injustice, even if it meant being blackballed from the NFL and continues his charity work.

Other worthy members of the short list include a prominent movement that started this year, #MeToo, which shed light on the continued rampant prevalence of sexual assault and harassment.

The Dreamers who are comprised of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States of America by their parents who now face uncertainty now that the Trump administration is seeking to end Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (#DefendDACA).

The rest of the shortlist includes: Jeff Bezos, Xi Jinping, Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, Robert Mueller, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
