Jon Bernthal Talks ‘Punisher’ & Why He Took The Role
WARNING! Subtle SPOILERS if you haven’t seen The Punisher yet. Go watch it!
The Punisher just dropped last week and let me tell you, what I’ve seen so far has been great. I’ve been a fan of Jon Bernthal as an actor since I first saw him in The Walking Dead and he really has an authentic take on Frank Castle aka Punisher. Could you believe that someone so perfect for the role almost didn’t take it? I know, I gasped when I found out as well.
Bernthal was recently on Variety’s podcast, Remote Control, and gave some interesting news on his initial reaction to the role in Daredevil‘s 2nd season. Here’s what he had to say:
“Fully candid, being part of a superhero franchise was not something that I really had an ambition towards; it wasn’t really on my radar. A lot of the people that I really admire, actors that I really look up to have avoided that whole thing.”
Thankfully, there was more to this role that meets the eye and enticed Bernthal to take on the part of Punisher. He goes on to say on the matter:
“He didn’t have any super (powers); he didn’t have a mask. He was a grieving father and husband who was reeling from this unbelievably traumatic event. There was something about that scared the you-know-what out of me and left me intrigued.”
You can really tell when an actor feels indebted to a role because it pours out of their performance in almost every scene & that is definitely the case for Bernthal & The Punisher. As of now, a second season hasn’t been confirmed but here’s hoping!
Sound off in the comments or on Twitter & be sure to watch The Punisher on Netflix now!
